Our history

More than six decades of political history

The APC was founded on 20 March 1960 and has played a defining role in Sierra Leone’s post-independence political life. This concise timeline is adapted from Wikipedia.

The party is founded

The All People’s Congress emerged from a split with the Sierra Leone People’s Party, with Siaka Stevens named as its founder.

Years in government

The APC governed Sierra Leone through the presidencies of Siaka Stevens and Joseph Saidu Momoh.

Return to government

Ernest Bai Koroma won the presidential election, and the APC became the governing party again.

Renewal in opposition

Since the 2018 change of government, the APC has continued as one of Sierra Leone’s two major political parties.
